Hi and welcome to my blog.  If you are familiar with Paul Harvey, he used to have a show call "The Rest of the Story".  He would tell the story behind different people and things and it was always interesting to me.  As often as I can, I think I'll tell the story behind some of my pictures.  I love the stories behind the pictures that people take.  It's what really brings them to life.  Hope you enjoy it..

Up in Smoke

February 20, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Dancer I had seen an article on photographing smoke so I decided to play around a little in my studio and see what I could come up with. This is one of the ones that I really liked.  I can see a dancer in the smoke and it just seems very graceful to me.  I took this one with my Canon 40D, 50mm lens, and a strobe with a softbox and a reflector on the opposite side.  It's taken against a black backdrop and then inverted during the post processing.

Most people use incense to create the smoke but I could not find any place with incense so I had to be creative.  I tightly rolled up a section of paper towl and put it in a clamp.  I lit it and let it burn for just a few seconds before blowing out the flame.  After that I had an abundance of smoke.

If one is good then three has to be better right?  Same as above only I added two more clamps with rolled up paper towels.  I also switched over to my Canon 7D and my 70-200 lens.  Was hoping to get a little better quality and I think it looks better.   I also added a little bit of color during the post processing.  This is really a fun and creative project to experiment with using different colors and bag.
